Gallery Page 1

YO! IF YOU ARE GRABBING MY SHOTS TO REPOST ELSEWHERE, NO PROBLEM, BUT GIVE ME PROPER PHOTO CREDIT. AMAZES ME THAT I NEED TO TELL PEOPLE THAT.

GALLERY PAGE 2 leaves off from the end of this gallery page, so check it out!

If you came straight to the gallery here, you may want to check back through the posts starting March ’09, as I’m starting to post photos there as well.

/>My archive is probably around 20,000 images (mostly slides and now some digital shots), starting back from 1990. I’m slowly getting it all properly scanned for safe keeping, and I’m identifying everything I can. I will be calling on folks to help with that over time. I will be reorganizing the gallery page soon, but here is what you can see for the time being.

I’m picking and choosing as I go along, showing many of the Usual Suspects, as well as writers not widely know or remembered.

SOME of the photos are not great (bad light, off-focus), but worth looking at.

Here’s some early Kofie quickies (with Gatcha sometimes) from my archive from 1994. He’s an example of what happens to someone with talent that keeps pushing forward.

Check his site Keep Drafting!

A while back, there was a post thread on 50mm concerning Skill UTI. I posted some pics, but in case folks didn’t see them or don’t look at that forum, here they are.
From the Panic Zone, ’92:

Late ’93 out in the SFV with Seltic:

And finally, ’94 down in the Arroyo with Smurf:

pg-173-skill-smurf-3.jpg

School of Hard Knox by SH, Belmont. 6-94 from here down to the Gear photo…
pg-182-school-of-hardknox.jpg

Panic’s presence in the letters is clear, as Precise’s is in the character work. Here’s a detail:
pg-182-precise-bt-6-94.jpg

Mural STK has always had an interesting loose style, and this example is from the Arroyo:
pg-183-mural-arroyo-6-94.jpg

Xpres was a major character heavyweight early on:
pg-183-xpres-mel-6-94.jpg

And Nuke’s characters and letters always stood out too:
pg-182-nuke-sparc-6-94.jpg

Many writers and crews have come and gone, some getting recognition, and others not so much. Here is Gear MDK on Belmont Hill:
pg-182-gear-bt-hill-6-94.jpg

PET crew, Highland Park, 2-93:
pg-105-g-hp-2-93.jpg

Sure, you’ve seen pics of this, but maybe not so early with good color. Zender and friends, Highland Park, 2-93:
pg-105-zender-2-93.jpg

Very interesting because KGB (Kids Gone Bad) were one of the important first generation crews and there are not that many photos of their stuff. 3-93

Sacred at Santa Fe yard. Always interesting to see cholo letters (COI…) on a cross.
pg-107-sacred-7sf-3-93.jpg

Xpres and Krash on Melrose. You can see it’s a photo-in-process in that I’m in the middle of using photoshop to remove the posts in front of the piece.

C2D, “Create To Devastate,” came out of DP, “Def Productions.” Odin and Dazzle on this bit on Melrose.
pg-108-c2d-odin-dazzle.jpg

A ton of people painted decent stuff but never became acknowledged names. Care was one of those people, here at Motor.
pg-108-care-mn-3-93.jpg

Jick, a top early character writer (and he had good letters too) at Huntington Beach.
pg-108-jick-hb-3-93.jpg

NASA crew, always awsome!
pg-108-nasa-hb-3-93.jpg

Rich and Just195 at the beach.
pg-108-rich-just.jpg

Skate, on Melrose.
pg-108-skate-mel-3-93.jpg

Vybe AWR alway had good letters. He also wrote Veo. Here at 7th and Santa Fe.
pg-108-vybe-7sf.jpg

I know a lot of people have seen this classic Xpres character, but here it is again. Melrose.
pg-108-xpres-3-93.jpg

Item TCS (Tough City Squad, The Chronic Sons etc.) at Huntington.
pg-109-item-3-93.jpg

Ah, Charlie at Motor. It’s easy to see why he inspired so many.
pg-109-mn-3-93.jpg

Persu (not to be confused with Persue of Bunnykitty reknown). Love this shot because of the guys hanging out with a blackbook.
pg-109-persu-3-93.jpg

Relm at Motor. He was always one of my absolute favorites. This piece (I don’t think I want to know what it’s about) was right next to the Doze and Wen RSC pieces in my book. And if you don’t have my book yet, you’re worse than Hitler. And don’t rack it, ya.
pg-109-relm-3-93.jpg

TCS crew at Huntington.

Just because I came across some of these while scanning (I’m only complete with scanning my slides up to 11/94, and then various bits after that), I thought I’d post them.

This the earliest shot of Fear I have, from 8-91 at Belmont:
pg-32-fearbt-8-91.jpg

This is the first shot I have of his transition from his previous style where the emphasis was on letterblends, to more segmented/fractured. From 6-96 at Belmont:
pg-248-fearbt-6-96.jpg

Ok, now he is starting to emphasize a bit more straight block/bits over round forms. From 4-97 at Belmont.
pg-268-fearbt-4-97.jpg

I haven’t gotten up to the point in my scanning where I can show the earliest example of his fractured “bits and chips” style that we are familiar with these days, so here’s a more recent one from Highland Park, 10-08.
pg-697c-fear-10-08.jpg

I’m going back to dates where I was in earlier postings.

pg-21-bt-7-91.jpg

Angur (not to be confused with Anger CBS), and Dream at Belmont:

pg-21-ds-one-ss-7-91.jpg

Frame at Sanborn:
pg-21-frame-ss-7-91.jpg

Marvel (Won Ton Men) at Belmont. Really interesting to see people bring in different sides of their culture, here showing not only modern graff, but Kanji and either Hiragana or Katagana.

Looking at LOD facebook photos, there was a nice Panic posting of Ranger Rick’s, a short-lived yard in Griffith Park. Skate turned me onto the place, and I thought I’d post just a quick couple, Mel DFB and Bash from 5-93, and Bash from 7-93. Then since Panic also posted a Treeline yard shot, I thought I’d post an alternative shot from that yard of the shot in my book, from 6-95:

As I mentioned in the post of 5-29-11, I’m going to repost the material I had put on Myspace (anyone remember MS?). Just to have things a bit different, I was posting slightly later photos, starting from late 1992, although that seems moot now that I’m posting just on the blog here, but what the heck, it’s all interesting.

“3A” (Against All Authority), by Talo, I believe, with Besh, Motor yard, 9-91. As I scan my slides onto disc and HD for safekeeping, I get annoyed at myself for sometimes shooting too tight; I would like to see the whole piece and tag on the right. Big ups to “Lil Spanky” for the ID, and for hipping me to KTE, PTI and 3A crews!

  8. on 07 Aug 2008 at 3:27 amsteveWP

    Jazzmyne,
Sorry, but I don’t have the resources to send anybody photos (hours to find it, paper/ink costs multiplied by 1,000 guys wanting photos, setting up, you get the idea). Try going to 50mmlosangeles and searching for WAI in the gallery, or Plek or 2Shae and see if you can find it, then you might be able to have someone print it out for you.

Dam, being from Anaheim,, and having my lil passport for the HB walls,, could have been such an influence, and it was, for a lil while,, seeing NASA, and UTA, and Latin Dream Boys, VOB, CYS, some dude Mask1 that hit the 55 ,,, all those fools, BUT, I just wasted it , traded it for the in thing at that time “freeway mobbing”……….I was more drivin by the rush of gettin up, instead of practice and art……….but i picked up bits and pieces through the years,,,,,, AND I would’nt change the way I did it for nothin’!! Well maybe a lil hahahhahaaaa………. Love my crew and all the peolpe we grew up with, I’ll N E V E R forget all the TAGGERS who used to crush ANAHEIM!! Most of us are in jail, got into gangs, dope fiends???????? I dont care,, I loved that time of my life!! Peace to all the MOBBERS! Bleech 1 DTDIS9

i like your site and what your reppin. i can tell your somewhat new to the game but have the right intentions. ive been in cbs since 88. i have la flicks that can do your site justice. eitherway represent. keep it up

  27. on 09 Mar 2010 at 12:02 amsteveWP

    Tren,

I may not have ever bombed, so there’s certainly an OG/insider’s perspective that I don’t pretend to have, but “new to the game”? This is my twenty year anniversary of non-stop documenting of the L.A. scene and I believe I met you at Sanborn yard just after you finished the piece of yours show above from 5-91 (unless it was some thin Asian kid pretending to be you, if my memory serves).

In any event, I’m glad you like the site, but if you don’t have the book yet, you’ll want to get it, because CBS and its history is well repped. You’ll want the book just for the opening photo for that matter!

Let me know what you think.

    Thanks for writing,

    Steve

  36. on 06 May 2011 at 8:50 pmsteveWP

Pyro; it’s really simple, I wasn’t taking pictures until 1990, so all my stuff is after that time. My site is not like 50mm where people can send in flicks easy for posting. If you want to see first generation, there’s 50mm, or get in touch with Cartoon K2S to see his shots.

  37. on 15 Jun 2011 at 7:02 amfearo

Steve, I like all the new pics in the gallery. You have some great ones in here. I do believe the 3-91 shot at Belmont with green insides and purple outline is Pluma BYI aka Pen AM7. Maybe you can ask Krenz just to double check.

Hey Steve, that WCA? piece, I believe is actually Myte AWR…Not West Coast. Hope this helps

  41. on 15 Aug 2011 at 9:29 pmPyro

My bad, was looking at the wrong picture…duh! That West i think is from Ser. I could be wrong.

  42. on 01 Sep 2011 at 6:11 amOdin

The Odin Piece that says west is not an Odin or Cloud9 piece. That’s a west piece by west? The Dp underneath is a Odin. Thank you.

  43. on 01 Sep 2011 at 6:19 amOdin

You wanted to know if DS or DS1 is an artist. He shortened his name from Dis and changed it to DS which stands for Def Style. DS was from DP Crew and Fly I.D. Although your correct about an art crew that happens to be called DS for Dope Style. It’s unknown if any issues have circulated because of this.

  44. on 01 Sep 2011 at 6:22 amOdin

The C2D Piece on Melrose was done by Odin and Dazzle. Not Mel… but thanks, Peace!

  45. on 02 Sep 2011 at 5:01 amsteveWP

Odin; the “West” piece was a mistake, and I corrected the photo that I actually wanted there. Thanks for pointing that out and the other clarifications!

  46. on 02 Sep 2011 at 9:41 pmOdin

Wow! Thank you for the picture of the DP. I do not have this in my files. Thank you!

  47. on 02 Sep 2011 at 9:43 pmOdin

P.s. That “west” is M.T.A if I’m not mistaken. But certainly not wca.

  48. on 11 Sep 2011 at 10:43 amCBee

Loving your photography and documentation work! just a couple quick corrections:
That piece labeled “cisk” above is actually USK crew(note the OZER USK tag above it).

Also, on the cd-rom on page 3 under “pieces” there is a “PolTergeIst” (for PTI crew)piece at the venice done by TALO and DEIL which has been incorrectly labeled as “italo”.

  49. on 15 Sep 2011 at 9:47 pmCBone

That Motor Yard pic is 3A (Against All Authority) crew. And if i’m reading that tag in the upper left correctly, i believe i was done by BESH. hope that helps

  50. on 03 Jan 2012 at 3:08 amZone WST (San Diego)

Steve, great job with the book. I was skeptical about it untill I actually picked it up. Lots of history and great photos. As an old San Diego head we used to come up and paint belmont on occasion and we used to host Charlie, Frame, Dream (RIP) and others when they came down to San Diego

Anyways, we went up to LA to paint Belmont one time in 1990 and met a guy who photographed our crew in front of a production we did. He said he just liked to document graff…I’m wondering if that guy was you? The production read “SDKings” and had a character holding a lantern..I know it a long shot..Also wondering if you documented other stuff we did in LA like the Zodak Piece with the snake intertwined in the letters at the Huntington beach sea walls in 93…TIA and great book and site.

  51. on 04 May 2013 at 3:31 pmDS one

Thanks for the props on the pics. Odin is correct about the DS name derivative, but I was never from Fly ID. I was from OTR, TSS, CBS, DP and TK. Eventually took to one crew only – Def Productions.
